Unfortunately, to stop an Addiction one must go THROUGH the emotional pain, (and sometimes mental illness), that comes, when not using the escape mechanism of choice.
The addiction is an escape from feeling - so it actually is saving us, but it just has a price…
In running from the uncomfortablefeelings
, the addict makes more… pursuing an RUNNING AWAY FROM feeling If psychotropics relieve suicidal ideation and hazardous emotional and personality flips, why to then can non-prescription medication and para-suicidal behavior not be used to ease the pain as well? Because sometimes, the drugs and escape mechanisms interfere with daily living, (and make you an asshole).
That’s when they say you, “have a problem.”
If you "sell your soul" you have succumbed to fear. That means lack of faith. That means Spirit, Universe, God, Love, cannot enter your heart. Your subconscious takes notes, and triggers self-sabotaging behaviors. God does not block us from our good, we do, when we are ashamed of our thoughts, feelings and actions.

Alcoholics Anonymous is the world's most successful program at getting people sober - perhaps not keeping them sober, but it is a home to countless who have found refuge for their souls in the halls of Alcoholics Anonymous and the pages of the "Big Book."
They don't stay for sobriety, they stay for the FELLOWSHIP, and the stories of before and after shared at every meeting. The ego likes to think we are "all good." The stories remind us where we would be if not for the grace of God. Not because of Alcoholism or Addiction, but because of the Ego. The "human condition."
THE ALCOHOLS ANONYMOUS BIG BOOK IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT BOOK OF OUR TIME ON HOW TO LIVE A SPIRITUAL LIFE.
It is suggested that there is a "Way for Daily Living" that encompasses meditation, prayer, etc., but first there is an evaluation period as to whether the person needs a new way of living, and whether they can do it alone or not, and that, possibly, there is a power greater than them that is needed to help them carry out their change of life, needed to stay sober.
It is a spiritual solution for a malady of the soul, as Carl Yung called it, within the Big Book itself. The problem is within the soul and the solution is within the soul - the reconnection to our fellow human beings. The solution for addiction, un-happiness and emotional pain is not a medical or psychological solution
The most significant aspect of the AA work is the "step work," which requires a sponsor. In AA many are hurt, financially, emotionally, physically and sexually by their sponsor or community. Don't let the humans ruin the purity of the messaging of this great Book and teaching....Find a good sponsor, or tap into one of our AA Step Work Groups.
Step work and self reflection are for the purposes of busting your ego -a good teaching will be an ego buster, which means you will hate them 99% of the time. That's a sign of a good sponsor/teacher/friend.
If you see a human in emotional pain, afraid to feel, give them a hug. Let them know it will be ok. Let them know spirit didn't bring them this far just to drop them on their ass...
Whatever you do, don't do NOTHING.
If you SEE pain in another human being, do or say SOMETHING - if you acknowledge their pain you may just have saved their life.

To understand yourself is to understand the world. Feeling your feelings, and your fellow human beings' feelings, can be painful, but the alternative is far more deadly to the soul.
